The Citadel (Cittadella) is the most iconic landmark on Gozo and the island’s most important historical attraction. The Citadel has served as Gozo’s principal fortified settlement for more than 3,000 years. More importantly, it protected the island’s population during periods of invasion, piracy, and conflict throughout the Mediterranean.

As a result, its buildings reflect a remarkable blend of Roman, medieval, and Baroque influences. In addition, the Knights of St John transformed the Citadel into one of the strongest fortifications in the Maltese Islands following the Ottoman attack of 1551.

The Citadel is located in the centre of Victoria (Rabat), the capital of Gozo, and is easily reached on foot from the town’s main square and bus terminal. Furthermore, Victoria is approximately 10 minutes by car from Mġarr Harbour, where ferries arrive from Malta. In addition, paid and free parking areas are available near the entrance to the Citadel.
