Santa Marija Tower is one of the most recognisable landmarks on Comino Island. Built on a hill overlooking the island, the historic watchtower offers spectacular views of Comino, Gozo, Malta, and the surrounding Mediterranean Sea. The tower was built in 1618 by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt as part of a network of coastal watchtowers across the Maltese Islands. As a result, it became an important defensive structure protecting the islands from pirate raids and enemy attacks.
Standing around 12 metres high, Santa Marija Tower features thick limestone walls, corner turrets, and a large rooftop terrace. In addition, its elevated position provided guards with clear views across the sea, allowing them to spot approaching ships from many kilometres away.
Over the centuries, the tower served several purposes. It acted as a military outpost, observation post, and communication station. Furthermore, signals sent from the tower helped warn neighbouring fortifications of possible danger.

Santa Marija Tower played a vital role in defending the Maltese Islands during the 17th century. At that time, the Knights of St John strengthened Malta’s coastal defences to protect against Ottoman forces and Barbary pirates.
The tower formed part of the Wignacourt Towers system, one of the earliest coastal defence networks in Malta. Consequently, it became an important link in the island’s military communication system.
Small military garrisons lived inside the tower for many years. In addition, soldiers monitored nearby sea routes and protected the small community living on Comino.
During the British period, the tower continued to serve military purposes before later falling into disrepair. However, extensive restoration work returned the building to its former appearance.
Today, Santa Marija Tower stands as an important reminder of Malta’s military history. At the same time, it remains one of Comino’s most visited historical attractions.

Santa Marija Tower is located on Comino Island and can only be reached by boat. Visitors usually arrive from Ċirkewwa, Gozo, Sliema, Bugibba, or St Paul’s Bay before walking to the tower.
Furthermore, the walk includes uneven paths and exposed sections. Therefore, comfortable walking shoes, drinking water, and sun protection are strongly recommended, especially during the warmer months.
